Day 16 - An-Nūr: The Light, The Illuminator

March 5, 2026

Today’s reflection lingered on the beautiful and deeply profound verses of Surah An-Nur, where Allah describes Himself as the Light of the heavens and the earth. Light upon light.

Subhān’Allah. Even the words themselves feel luminous. Allah tells us that He guides to His light whoever He wills. And then He describes places where that light is allowed to shine i.e., houses that are raised for His remembrance, where His names are mentioned morning and evening.

When I read that verse, my mind immediately went to the masjid. Those sacred spaces where hearts gather, where the Qur’an is recited, where Allah’s names echo softly between the walls. But then I paused and asked myself something I hadn’t thought about before: What about my home?

In what ways have I made my home a place worthy of receiving Allah’s light? Is it a place where His names are mentioned? Where the Qur’an is recited? Where prayer interrupts the busyness of life? Or has the noise of the world slowly crept in, filling the space with distractions that leave little room for remembrance?

Allah goes on to describe the people whose hearts are attached to His remembrance. They are people who are not distracted by buying or selling from remembering Allah, from establishing prayer, from giving zakat. Their hearts remain conscious of a Day when everything will be laid bare before their Lord.

What struck me about this description is that Allah does not say they have no responsibilities. They still buy and sell. They still move through the rhythm of daily life. But those things do not distract them. Their hearts remain anchored.

And I found myself reflecting on the many distractions that quietly pull at my own attention. Notifications. Tasks. Endless small things that seem harmless in the moment but slowly fill the space that remembrance once occupied. Not because they are inherently wrong. But because they can so easily become barriers. Barriers to the light of Allah’s guidance.

If Allah is An-Nūr, then His light is what illuminates our path. It is what allows us to see clearly, what matters, what lasts, what truly deserves our attention. Without that light, it becomes easy to wander. These verses reminded me that light does not simply appear in a space. It is welcomed. It is nurtured. It is protected.

Perhaps the same is true for the light of Allah in our lives. It grows in spaces where His name is mentioned. Where hearts pause for prayer. Where the Qur’an is opened. Where remembrance interrupts distraction. And maybe that light begins not in grand spaces, but quietly, within our own homes.

Ya Nūr, You are the Light of the heavens and the earth. Illuminate my heart with Your guidance and fill my home with Your remembrance. Remove the distractions that pull me away from You and allow my space to become a place where Your light is welcomed and nurtured. Let my heart remain anchored in Your remembrance even as I move through the busyness of this world. And guide me always to Your light, light upon light. Amin ya Rabb.

With Love,

Ibtisam
