Day 23 - Al-Barr, The Source of All Goodness

March 12, 2026

Today my reflection settled on a set of verses in Surah At-Tur [52:17-28] in which Allah describes the reward awaiting the righteous in Jannah. The verses paint such a vivid image of the peace and joy that awaits those who believed and tried their best to live faithfully in this world. But the ayah that held my attention the longest was verse 21:

“As for those who believe and whose descendants follow them in faith, We will elevate their descendants to their rank, never discounting anything of the reward of their deeds. Every person will reap only what they sowed.” [52:21]

Subhān’Allah. For the past few days I had been sitting with heavy questions about legacy. I kept finding myself thinking about what remains of us once we are gone. How the heavens might make mention of me. Whether my name would be remembered with goodness on the earth. Whether this deen would continue through my lineage after I return to Allah.

To be honest, those thoughts had left me in a somewhat somber state. There is something deeply humbling about thinking of how small our lives can feel in the vastness of time, and how uncertain the ripple effects of our actions may be. But when I came across this ayah today, it felt like a reassurance from Allah, a quiet response to those thoughts.

Allah tells us that when descendants follow their forefathers in faith, He will elevate them to the same rank in Jannah without decreasing anything from the reward of either of their deeds. Subhān’Allah. What an incredible manifestation of Allah’s goodness.

It immediately brought my thoughts to my grandmother, may Allah have mercy upon her, the woman I often describe as my woman of Qur’an. She was not a scholar. She was not a hafidha. But her love for the Qur’an was something I witnessed throughout my childhood. Her devotion to worship was unwavering. Even well into her old age, she was constantly engaged in dhikr, constantly returning to the Qur’an. Worship was simply the rhythm of her life.

And reading this ayah made me wonder if perhaps the path I find myself on today is not only because of my own striving. Perhaps it is the result of du‘as that were made long before I was even aware of them. Perhaps it is because of her du‘as. And the du‘as of the many ancestors who came before her.

Perhaps by the mercy and permission of Allah, my mother became the woman she is in her devotion to Allah because of those prayers. And perhaps I am who I am today, trying in my own small way to catch up to their footsteps and be even half the women they were because Allah allowed their sincerity to ripple through the generations that followed them.

And maybe, just maybe, Allah in His kindness will allow me to be elevated to their ranks in Jannah simply because I followed them in faith. I pray Allah makes it so. What a mercy that would be. What a gift.

But the ayah also turned my thoughts forward. If I strive sincerely in the path of Allah, perhaps Allah in His goodness will elevate my descendants as well. Perhaps generations after me might find their way to Him through the quiet efforts made today.

And it maybe that the efforts I make today, the du‘as I whisper, the love for the Qur’an I try to cultivate, the devotion I try to hold onto might become the seeds of faith for generations after me. Perhaps the legacy of faith can travel forward just as it traveled toward me.

And then I imagined the scene these verses describe, one day, by the mercy of Allah, we may all gather in Jannah together.  Families reunited. Sitting together in peace after the struggles of this world have ended. Reminiscing about the journey that brought us here, about the life we once lived in this world. Remembering the struggles we endured, the moments we stumbled, the times we fell short, but Allah covered us with His mercy and allowed us to continue striving.

And in that moment, we will recognize what Allah reminds us of in these very verses, that He is Al-Barr, The Source of all goodness, the One who is perfectly kind, benevolent, and generous in rewarding His servants. He is the One whose goodness is vast, whose kindness surpasses what we could ever imagine. And that He has been kind and merciful to us all along.

Because what greater goodness could there be than Allah gathering generations of believers together in Jannah and elevating them in rank out of His mercy? Sometimes we worry about what kind of legacy we will leave behind. But perhaps the greatest legacy is simply striving to live in a way that draws us closer to Allah, trusting that through His name Al-Barr, His goodness will extend far beyond what we can see in our lifetime.

Allah’s kindness is subtle. It moves quietly through generations, through du‘as whispered in the night, through small acts of devotion that seem ordinary in the moment but echo far beyond what we can see.

Ya Barr, You are the Source of all goodness and kindness. Have mercy on those who came before me, my parents, my grandparents, and the generations whose du‘as and devotion helped guide me toward You. Allow me to be among worthy descendants who follow them in faith.

Elevate me to their ranks in Jannah by Your mercy without diminishing the reward of any of them. And Ya Rabb, allow the light of this deen to continue through the generations after me. Let my efforts today become seeds of faith that grow long after I am gone.

Gather us one day in Jannah with those we love, reminiscing about the journey that brought us there and praising You for the endless goodness You showed us along the way.

With Love,

Ibtisam
